Can you believe it? It’s almost 2022!

2021 was a whirlwind of a year but it flew by in a blink of an eye. While we continued to battle the trials and tribulations of the pandemic and adjusted to a new normal, hair trends continued to evolve. Afterall, in a world where we feel little control over larger economic and political situations, one thing we can control is our hair. Hair creativity will never cease to exist and the desire for new creative forms of expression through hair will continue to inspire us to keep moving forward.

So what are our predictions? We believe 2022 will ring in with the old, but incorporate some new trending hairstyles. Let’s take a look at our predictions.

In 2021, there was a huge surge in long shags for women. The piecey, shaggy look, best achieved by a razor, gave life to hair. Voluminous and free, you would see shaggy rocker looks or more romantic wispy shag looks. With shorter layers in the back, volume was the name of the game for shags this year. Paired with some form of bangs (curtain bangs, baby bangs, side swept bangs) we believe the long shag will continue to trend in 2022.

But we will see a greater focus on shorter shags in 2022. Also, soft, piecey and layered, the short shag is fun, cute and spunky. With a slight curl or wave, the layers of a short shag give more volume to the hair but it’s less dramatic than the long shag.

Along, the lines of the short shag, the French bob, will continue to grow. The French bob has a more European look, hence ‘French.’ Shorter than a short shag, the French bob is generally above chin length and is paired with some sort of bangs (baby bangs, heavy bangs). It’s also somewhat curled or straight or sometimes curled at the ends. The French bob is a super cute haircut that can be sophisticated, playful and indie depending how it’s styled. Look for more French bobs come 2022.

The blunt bob will also trend in 2022. It’s low maintenance, sleek and simple. Thanks to Kourtney Kardashian, she has popularized this haircut lately. With either a hard part down the middle or to the side, the stick straight look is sexy and sophisticated. It’s a very precise cut best achieved with scissors. While it’s always been a classic bob cut, its ability to be glamourous and versatile is the draw to this haircut right now.

Lastly, how can we forget about the mullet. Who would have ever thought the mullet would come back in a big way? Well it has and it will continue to do so through 2022. But the mullet of today is not the same as the mullet of the past. Today’s mullets are more colorful and have greater variation. Some mullets are long, some are short, some have shaved sides and others don’t. The mullet has so much variety, it’s the spice of life right now in trending haircuts. It’s rebellious. It’s bold. It’s rocker. And people like this haircut because they get to express themselves in a cool and fun way. But one of the most unique things about this haircut is that it crosses genders. Both men and women have taken to this haircut in a big way. Androgynous hairstyles are a trend we will see more of in the future as gender lines continue to blur.

Speaking of expression, the other trendy haircut for 2022 may just be the shaved head with hair dye designs. With this hairstyle, you are sure to stand out and make a statement. Rebellious, the shaved head is being popularized by women with unique and creative designs made with hair dye. From animal print to bright colors to checkers, flames and flowers, the options are limitless. Not only is hair dye used to create a design but hair is also cut to create patterns within the hair.

We never truly know what will take off each year, but based on what we are seeing here at the end of 2021 we are going to expand on what’s already popular in 2021. Or perhaps you will create a new trend. Until then, enjoy the rest of the year and we look forward to seeing what 2022 brings to the hair industry.
