You can, but the thumb guard will be shorter than the other two.

The thicker side should face the inside of the hand. This is the side that resists the most heat and will offer the most protection. The thinner side can resist heat, but not as well.

Finger guards give you more hand freedom and flexibility. Gloves can be restrictive and not fit properly. Also, the finger guards can be made of better material to protect the fingers.
